Matthew Anthes-Washburn

Title: Product Manager, Engagement
Joined HealthSparq: May 2015
Based in: Portland, OR
Hometown: Worchester, MA

How would you describe what you do at HealthSparq?
Mostly I go around trying to figure out what everyone does and who needs to talk to who to get the most important things done. I focus on user engagement for our employer product, which means I work to understand the needs of customers / regular people who would use our tools and then take that information and use it to shape what we build in the product.

What’s your favorite part about working here?
That the problems we are trying to solve are tricky and haven’t been solved before.

What’s one interesting fact about you?
I taught physics for 10 years before I started doing software.

If you could make one prediction for the future of health care, what would it be?
That health care would be easy to use…and sometimes even a little fun.

Title: Director of Marketing
Joined HealthSparq: June 2014
Based in: Portland, OR
Hometown: Happy Valley, Oregon

How would you describe what you do at HealthSparq?
I work in marketing, so I work to make things pretty. I work to dream up the campaigns that let people know what we offer and then figure out the ways to sell it.

What’s your favorite part about working here?
Cupcakes and milkshakes! And the people. We have a great team, but I also like that we have cupcakes and ice cream sandwiches downstairs.

What’s one interesting fact about you?
I slept in my Olaf costume last night.

If you could make one prediction for the future of health care, what would it be?
Accessibility and education are going to change the health-care landscape – people will take the driver’s seat when it comes to their own health care. I think that as accessibility and education increase, it’ll fix a lot of things that are wrong with health care today. People will consume health care easier and drive cost down.

Title: Director of Technology Operations
Joined HealthSparq: February 2015
Based in: Portland, OR
Hometown: Tigard, OR

How would you describe what you do at HealthSparq?
I lead a group of highly talented DevOps and cloud infrastructure engineers that maintains our entire ecosystem of our SAAS applications and keeps things stable, safe and secure…and of course working.

What’s your favorite part about working here?
I think HealthSparq honestly has all the ingredients of a great company – super smart people, solid process and a really cool technology product that’s bringing transparency to where it matters.

What’s one interesting fact about you?
I need an entire roll of paper towels to eat BBQ – I hate getting messy!

If you could make one prediction for the future of health care, what would it be?
I think the concept of virtual doctor and virtual doctor visits without the waiting room will develop – there is big opportunity for tech to change that model. I think people can see their doctor, get diagnosed and get a prescription written all from their couch. Who wants to see a doctor when they’re sick? No one! It’s going to make so much sense when it happens, people will wonder why we never did it that way in the first place.
