What’s the Fix? Back in 2018 With New Partner Dell Medical School
Just about six months ago, we put on our first ever What’s the Fix? event to help the health care industry learn how to change by hearing from regular people. We hadn’t organized anything like it before and had no idea of what to expect.
What we found was that the health care community has a desire to learn more about patient-driven innovations and to hear inspiring stories of overcoming health care obstacles. At the end of an amazing day, 650 people had registered to participate, 2,600 tweets from close to 500 people were sent, and we even trended nationally on twitter (#WTFix). We had created a movement!
Even before the dust settled, our team got back together to discuss the possibility of WTF2, knowing that we had a great foundation to build upon and a desire to go even bigger and make a more significant difference. One of the first to-dos was finding a place to host the event in 2018 that could expose the stories to more people who could make a difference in changing health care.
As we evaluated options, one clearly stood out for us. The Design Institute for Health at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin (a collaboration between Dell Med and the College of Fine Arts) was the perfect potential partner. Austin has a very active health care community, the med school is only two classes old and extremely innovative, and the Design Institute is focused on helping the med school be people and community focused. All the elements added up to be an ideal match. The Design Institute and Dell Med agreed to the partnership almost immediately.
Adding med students to our audiences of providers, patients, health plans and anyone who wants to improve health care offers us a huge opportunity to help change thinking. Med students hearing and learning from patients in the very beginning of their medical education can help shape the people they become and the care they give.
I couldn’t be more excited about having the Design Institute and Dell Med as partners. We all share a focus on people and a desire to make a real difference in health care, which ensures our second What’s the Fix? will make an even bigger impact.
By the way, if it’s not clear from the above, What’s the Fix? will be presented by HealthSparq and the Design Institute for Health at Dell Medical School and will take place on May 16-17, 2018. We will stream the entire event live, and there will be no charge to attend – either in person or online. If you want to stay up to date on plans for next May, join our email list.
