For the past two years, many health insurance providers have anxiously awaited final direction from CMS to implement price transparency rules. With the first phase of enforcement for publicly accessible machine-readable files beginning July 1, 2022 and member access to out-of-pocket tools being required just six months later, the past months of work and preparation are coming to fruition. Some questions remain and plans are addressing data challenges, large file sizes for public files, and delivering member-facing experiences powered by new data. Adding to the complexity are new state mandates and confusion around state-level enforcement.
